To the casual golfer the preference of a golf club may have no significance to the value of their game, while to the serious golfer choosing and utilizing the right club is everything.

Golf Club Attributes:

Essentially there are two basic attributes of a golf club:

a) The loft of the club face; and

b) The length of the shaft.

Club Loft

The loft is the angle of the club face that determines the balls trajectory when struck with the club face.  A lower lofted, or angled club is more perpendicular to the ground, which results in a lower trajectory.  A higher lofted, or angled club will result in a ball that flies further with more trajectory.

Shaft Length

The length of the shaft of your club is important as it determines the plane of your swing.  Generally, the lower the loft of the club, the longer the shaft of the club will be.  As the loft gradually increases in each successive club, the length of the shaft will also decrease.  The longer the shaft of the club, the further away from the ball you stand when you swing, resulting in a more flatter horizontal plane.  The shorter the shaft of the club, the closer you stand to the ball, and the more vertical your swing plane becomes.

As such, a club with a low loft and longer shaft, such as a driver or 3 iron, will result in a longer distanced shot with a lower ball flight, and is likely to roll further once it lands on the ground.  Likewise, a club with a higher loft and a shorter staff, such as a 7, 8, 9 iron, or wedge, will result in a much higher ball flight traveling a shorter distance, and landing with much less likelihood of rolling when it lands on the ground.
